Alina Baraz, born in Cleveland, Ohio to Russian Jewish parents on 24th September 1993, was the first in her family to be raised as an American. Throughout her childhood she had a strong influence of classical music from her parents, but also found a fascination for 90s singers such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Corinne Bailey Rae. She has been singing since the age of young and sang in her gospel choir. When Alina was 19 she moved to Los Angeles with aspirations of pursuing a career in music. She wrote her debut song “Roses Dipped In Gold” which was released on April 15th 2013 and was part of the “Lounge Masters Vibes” collection series.

Upon moving to LA, Baraz stumbled across Galimatias’ music and wrote lyrics for one of his instrumentals; the song “Drift” was released on SoundCloud in 2013. Intrigued by the track, Galimatias proposed a joint project. Urban Flora was recorded without the two ever meeting face-to-face; they collaboratively sent music through Facebook. The EP featured several songs, including “Pretty Thoughts,” “Make You Feel,” and “Fantasy.”
In May 2015, it received a commercial release via Ultra Music to positive acclaim, earning number 111 on the US Billboard 200, and peaking at number 2 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. A remix edition followed in September and preceded a brief co-headlining tour throughout North America. Months later in August 2016, Baraz became signed to Mom + Pop Music who released a vinyl copy of Urban Flora.
In the spring and summer of 2016, Baraz made her debut solo live appearances at North American music festivals such as Lightning in a Bottle, Sasquatch! Music Festival, Electric Forest Festival and Lollapalooza. During that same time frame, she revealed she was working on her first studio album. Ultimately, this album was preceded by “Electric,” her single featuring American singer Khalid that came out on January 20, 2017 through Mom + Pop Music. This song also featured on Baraz’s second EP The Color of You in 2018. To promote the single and upcoming studio album, Baraz embarked on the ‘Let’s Get Lost Tour’ between March and April 2017 where she performed across multiple cities in the United States and Canada.
In the autumn of 2017, Baraz opened 8 North American concerts for Coldplay on their A Head Full of Dreams Tour. To mark the event, she released two singles – “Lavender and Velvet” and “Buzzin” – which were precursors to her debut studio album. The latter went on to reach number 10 in the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Digital Songs Chart and its music video premiered on Apple Music December 22, 2017. It has since been announced that Baraz will perform at Coachella 2018.
The Color of You, Baraz’s first solo EP, was released on April 6, 2018, along with a music video for the track “I Don’t Even Know Why Though”.Her debut studio album, It Was Divine, will be released on April 24th, 2020.
