Growing up, DaBaby attended Vance High School and graduated in 2010. He enrolled at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro for two years, however he dropped out during his third year as he wanted to focus on a career in music. It was during this period that he looked to big name rappers like Lil Wayne, Eminem, and 50 Cent for inspiration.
In the space of two years between 2014 and 2015, DaBaby began to take his music career seriously. Kicking off with a debut mixtape named “Nonfiction”, he followed this up with several mixtapes from the “God’s Work” series, “Billion Dollar Baby”, and “Baby Talk”. As part of this journey towards success, he initially went by the name of Baby Jesus but later changed it. As a result of his hard work, he was signed by South Coast Music Group and later Jay Z’s Roc Nation and Interscope Records.
DaBaby’s debut mixtape, ‘Nonfiction’, wasn’t well-received. Unfazed, he kept working and pursued other opportunities, despite lacking on-stage experience and the absence of a thriving rap music scene in Charlotte, North Carolina. In spring 2015, DaBaby decided to move to Austin, Texas and take part in the ‘South by Southwest Music Festival’, where he showcased his talent by performing live on many tracks from his mixtapes.
As a result of his festival success, he went on to release another mixtape in 2016, ‘God’s Work: Resurrected.’ He brought Boosie Badazz to collaborate with him on this mixtape. After the release of this mixtape, he began using the moniker “DaBaby.” He explained in an introduction to the mixtape that he changed his stage name for political reasons.
DaBaby’s ‘God’s Work: Resurrected’ mixtape was a great success and attracted much attention. Because he had no label, he typically put out his records and LPs on the web through sites such as SoundCloud, allowing him to garner a vast fanbase over time. In the months that followed, he unleashed more tapes like ‘Billion Dollar Baby’ and ‘Back on My Baby Jesus Sht’, earning greater notoriety with each new song. His ‘Baby Talk’ collection of mixtapes added to his fame.
In January 2017, DaBaby released the first installment of his ‘Baby Talk’ mixtape which turned out to be his most successful one. Throughout that year, he kept the momentum going releasing three more tapes that all achieved success. He also showed up at the South by Southwest Music Festival performing live. His single ‘Light Show’, released in 2016, was undoubtedly the stand-out of all his singles from the mixtapes and became immensely popular on SoundCloud, Datpiff and YouTube, propelling him to internet celebrity status.
In June 2018, he released ‘Baby Talk 5,’ the final entry of the ‘Baby Talk’ series. Ten months later, his next mixtape ‘Blank Blank’ brought him a fair amount of success. Early in 2019, came an even bigger breakthrough – the announcement of his record deal with ‘Interscope Records’, one of the biggest music labels in the nation. Subsequently, he unveiled that he was working on ‘Baby on Baby’, his first studio album. The album was eventually released in March 2019 and featured 13 tracks with popular artists Offset, Rich Homie Quan and Rich the Kid as guests.
