Nancy Kulp Education & Early Life

She grew up in a modest home, but had a keen interest in learning and reading. She excelled in school and graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class.

She then enrolled at Florida State University, where she majored in journalism and minored in French. She was active in various campus activities, such as the debate team, the drama club, and the student newspaper. She also became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She graduated with honors in 1943 and received a scholarship to study at the University of Miami.

However, her plans changed when World War II broke out. She decided to join the Women’s Naval Reserve (WAVES) and served as a public relations officer. She was stationed in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband, Charles Dacus, who was a Navy pilot. They married in 1946 and moved to California, where he pursued a career in aviation.

Nancy Kulp also wanted to continue her education and enrolled at the University of Southern California. She earned a master’s degree in English literature in 1951 and wrote a thesis on the works of William Faulkner. She also taught part-time at Los Angeles City College and UCLA.

Nancy Kulp Career

She moved to Hollywood in the late 1940s and began her acting career with small roles in films such as The Model and the Marriage Broker, Shane and Sabrina. She also appeared in several episodes of The Bob Cummings Show, where she met producer Paul Henning, who later cast her as Jane Hathaway in The Beverly Hillbillies.

Jane Hathaway was the loyal and efficient secretary of banker Milburn Drysdale, who managed the fortune of the Clampett family, a clan of hillbillies who moved to Beverly Hills after striking oil. Kulp played the role with a dry wit and a penchant for animal welfare, often clashing with the Clampetts’ rustic ways. She also had a crush on their nephew Jethro Bodine, played by Max Baer Jr., who was oblivious to her advances. The show was a huge hit and ran for nine seasons from 1962 to 1971.

After The Beverly Hillbillies ended, Kulp continued to act in various projects, such as the films The Aristocats and The Parent Trap II, and the TV shows Sanford and Son, The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. She also pursued her interest in politics and became involved with the Democratic Party. In 1984, she ran for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 9th district, but lost to the incumbent Republican Bud Shuster. She later moved to Palm Springs, California, where she served on several boards and commissions.

Kulp was diagnosed with cancer in 1990 and died in 1991 at the age of 69. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and inducted into the Pennsylvania Women’s Hall of Achievement. She is remembered as a talented and versatile actress who broke stereotypes and made audiences laugh.
