Tom Long’s Early Life, Education
Tom developed a love for acting at a young age and joined a local drama club when he was 10. He also enjoyed reading, writing, and playing music.
Tom attended the prestigious Sydney Grammar School, where he excelled academically and participated in various extracurricular activities. He was especially drawn to literature and history and won several awards for his essays and speeches. He also continued to act in school plays and musicals and became the president of the drama society.
After graduating from high school, Tom decided to pursue his dream of becoming a professional actor. He enrolled in the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where he studied acting, voice, movement, and theater history. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990 and soon landed his first role in a TV series called The Flying Doctors.

Long made his film debut in Country Life (1994), followed by roles in Doing Time for Patsy Cline (1997), Two Hands (1999), The Dish (2000) and The Book of Revelation (2006). He also starred in several Australian television series, such as SeaChange (1998-2000), Young Lions (2002), The Postcard Bandit (2003) and East of Everything (2008-2009). He was nominated for four awards for his acting, including two Australian Film Institute Awards and two Logie Awards.
Long was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, in 2012. He underwent chemotherapy and stem cell transplant, and participated in a medical trial in Seattle, Washington, in 2019, which declared him cancer-free. However, he died of encephalitis on 4 January 2020, at the age of 51. He was survived by his wife Rebecca Fleming, whom he married in 2019, and his son Ariel, whom he had with his former partner Rachael Maza.
Tom Long’s Relationship
Long met Maza in the early 1990s when they were both studying at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. They fell in love and had a son, Ariel, in 1998. However, they broke up shortly before Ariel’s birth and went their separate ways.
In 2005, Long and Maza reunited after a tragic car accident that killed Maza’s parents and left her and Ariel with serious injuries. Long supported them through their recovery and they rekindled their romance.
