Using the money he earned from a summer job, he traveled to South East Asia for four months. Even in the summer, he worked as a tour guide at a seasonal resort.

After studying Forestry and Natural Resource Conservation at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2008, James moved to China during his sophomore year and settled down in Chengdu, Sichuan.

In the eastern country, he launched his YouTube channel, The Food Ranger, heavily influenced by local cuisine and distinctive food items. Towards the end of 2019, he moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to experience the city’s culture. He left in June 2021.
